Reducing cost in business in my opinion is never done correctly. Why so? Cost reduction is often performed from a purely accounting perspective, what I mean is that you and/or your accountant will look at a Profit & Loss account and start hacking the cost base, overheads, materials, headcount, etc. with little if any regard for preservation of value, core competence of a business and the most overlooked area in cost reduction – increased productivity.

Don’t misread me here, if you are haemorrhaging money you need to reduce your cost base, but my experience in business is that if this is often done as a purely accounting based activity you will be in trouble down the road.

My approach with business owners and their business is that yes you need to reduce cost but in parallel you need to increase the productivity of your business. Accounting based cost reduction on its’ own is a flawed philosophy.
